Dig Dug (1983) arcade maze game developed by Namco, where players control the protagonist, Taizo Hori, to eliminate underground-dwelling enemies: Pookas, red creatures with goggles, and Fygars, fire-breathing green dragons. Players dig tunnels to navigate each level, using an air pump to inflate enemies until they burst or by crushing them under falling rocks. Strategic gameplay involves luring multiple enemies under rocks for higher points and triggering bonus items by dropping two rocks per stage. As levels progress, enemies become faster and more aggressive, with the last enemy attempting to escape the screen. The game comprises 256 stages, with increasing difficulty and varying dirt colors. “Dig Dug” was a critical and commercial success, becoming the second highest-grossing arcade game in Japan in 1982. It has since been ported to various platforms and included in numerous Namco compilations, influencing a series of sequels and spin-offs, including the “Mr. Driller” series.
